Statement
Shirley’s research has focused on Charles Darwin’s synchronic approach to knowledge through the exhibitions Thinking Path and Pen Rest. These bodies of work prompted an interest in the mechanics of motion, with current work focusing on how visual art might become an effective means to manifest the significance of walking through particular environments and landscapes. I am currently collaborating on Significant Walks, a Wellcome Trust funded project exploring the reality of walking with chronic low back pain. The research involves working with participants from across Sussex to capture experiences of walking that synthesise and animate quantitative data whilst simultaneously communicating qualitative experience.
