Walking with Children
Walking with Children is an ongoing research project by ReRouting (Berlin) and the Walking Artists Network (London), led by Clementine Butler-Gallie and Clare Qualmann.
The project proposes intergenerational artistic programming as a method of inclusion for caregivers and children in academic and cultural contexts. Walking is our key curatorial framework; through which we encompasses a range of (overlooked) mobilities and modes of movement.
At the heart of the project is a commitment as adults to learn with and from children. This project asks what becomes possible when children are not treated as just an audience, or as a practical consideration to be managed through childcare, but are actively included in cultural and research spaces alongside their caregivers. Walking with Children also intends to create conditions in which caregivers can participate with children, rather than having to choose between caring and taking part.
Walking with Children was first initiated as a program within the context of Walking Art Encounters Conference organised by the Department of Fine and Applied Arts of the University of Western Macedonia, in Prespa, Greece, 2025.

WALC is a conference that takes place every two years in the area around lake Prespa.
Walking with Children was conceptualised as an encounter within the encounter – one which invites participants to bring their children to the conference as well as creating a space for children to participate as equals in the activities. A series of workshops by different artists were formulated into a program, which invited both local and visiting participants as well as intergenerational encounters.
